Lafayette County

Lafayette Blue Spring State Park
lafayette county florida land

Mayo, is the county seat of Lafayette County, population 1,226, is small town America personified.  It has two excellent restaurants, a local grocery store, and at least one antique/collectible shop which is worth your time.

Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park is located less than 10 miles North of Mayo.  Here you will find two major springs and a spring run.  Cave divers travel from all over the world to explore nearly 33,000 feet of surveyed underwater passages at Peacock Springs. The park features one of the longest underwater cave systems in the continental United States. Only divers who show proof of their scuba certification are permitted to explore the underwater caverns.  Swimming in Peacock Springs and Orange Grove Sink are popular activities during the summer. Grills and pavilions are available for picnicking.

Mayo is 32 miles north of the Gulf coast fishing village of Steinhatchee.  Steinhatchee is an angler’s paradise where visitors can truly get away from it all. Steinhatchee is known as “The Best-Kept Secret in Florida,” and for good reason. With fewer than 1,000 residents and access to the Steinhatchee River and Gulf of America, a trip to Steinhatchee means plenty of time on the water — without the crowds.  Historically a fishing village, Steinhatchee retains that character in its charming buildings, laid-back marinas, and restaurants with stunning views of the water.

Mayo is the kind of place where, if you stay for a few days, your stress level will drop and may just disappear altogether.  Stay in or near Mayo for a day or two and you will get it.  You will understand.
